David Clutton

Dr David Clutton is a chemist by training and he began his career in 1968 in the Research and Development department at W&A Gilbey Ltd, one of the oldest names in London Dry Gin, who themselves began distilling gin in London in 1857.

During his time with International Distillers & Vintners (the company that Gilbey’s became in 1972), David completed an industry-based PhD relating to the production of gin and was responsible for much of the research on the company’s premium spirit brands. Subsequently he became a Technical Director working in Global Brand Development.

David has held numerous posts within a variety of bodies in the wine and spirits industry.

To name a few he has been:

  • Chairman of the The Wine and Spirit Association’s Technical Committee
  • Chairman of the The Gin and Vodka Association Production Group
  • A member of the UK government’s (MAFF) delegation at The International Organisation of Vine and Wine general assemblies (OIV)
  • A member of the technical committee of CEPS, the European representative body for Spirits producers
  • A member of FIVS – the Paris-based worldwide organization representing all sectors of the alcohol beverage industry

An independent consultant since 1997, David has lent his extensive knowledge of spirits distillation and pot stills to a number of companies in the world of Spirits and could immodestly claim direct responsibility for helping to create some of the most prestigious brands of gin in the world today.

At Berry Bros. & Rudd we are honoured to work with many people of the calibre of Dr David Clutton in the fields of wine and spirits.

But in the world of gin we believe that he is a member of just a very small group with such extensive experience and authority. The quality and the ‘taste of tradition’ of No.3 London Dry Gin are due to David’s skill.
